Friday 24th February – travel + 2 walks **** Cartagena and Parque
Regional Cabo Cope – sunny periods.
Second night in Par. Regional De Calblanque in out of the way spot,
relaxing start with exercises and breakfast then when leaving we saw we had
a small camper for company last night, we didn’t hear him drive in! The
wind had gone and the Med was calm but the sun was struggling to make an
appearance when we left to drive the short distance to Cartagena. We
quickly found a Lidl there by the old railway Station to stock up and then
headed down to the harbour. We drove through and thought it worth a stroll
so turned around and parked. We took a pretzel and cake and set off past
the fish dock with men repairing nets with the working dock behind where
the large ships moored. There was an arty building by the marina with a
large decked promenade with the old town and fort as a backdrop:) You
couldn’t walk in the marina close to the big yachts as there was a glass
barrier not a great idea in these parts as everything, cars, buildings etc.
are just covered in red dust after the rain, our poor van in absolutely
filthy :( Then the prom opened up even bigger and there moored on the other
side of the harbour was the most amazing silver, modern three masted wedge
shaped sailing ship called the Hamilton flying a British Ensign, we will
have to look it up on the internet. Then sitting all forlorn was a large
brass naked man looking down thinking where did I leave my pants:) His huge
feet where worn smooth where people had sat to have a photo taken and it
wasn’t true what they say about men with big feet!
We crossed the road and walked up the lovely marbled wide thoroughfare
leading to the main shopping area stopping at the tourist information for a
street map. We discovered there was lots to see close by including
Ramparts, a Roman District and an Amphitheatre. Passing the Grand Hotel an
impressive building on a corner we made it to the end of the old section
before getting lost for a while looking for the Roman Theatre and we had a
map to guide us! Back on track we found the Roman Forum District with two
old mills on a hill overlooking the town and you needed a good imagination
to see what it looked like in Roman times as there was not much left:( We
did however get our bearings so after our snack we headed down to the
covered museum where they had uncovered lovely tiled floor and some
columns, the best thing being the cat community being well fed by the
locals. There was an entry fee here so we passed as you could see most of
it from outside and headed to the Roman Theatre on a hill opposite by the
fort. There is a bit of renovation going on and several buildings where
only the front façade was standing only supported by a metal structure
from behind looking far from safe! Passing the narrow streets, we climbed
up towards the Roman Theatre a stone semi-circle set in the rocks which was
well preserved and again there was a small entrance fee but you could see
it brilliantly form outside so after taking a pic we continued up to the
fort for amazing panoramic views of the town and harbour:) It was very
pretty in the town with loads of flowers in bloom including Lavender,
Rosemary and huge Rubber Plant trees with stunning trunks and roots, we
even spotted a couple of peacocks which I chased about trying to take their
pic.
As it was getting on a bit when we got back to the van we decided to head
for the nearest National Park, the small Parque Regional Cabo Cope about 50
miles down the road. It was a lovely drive going past farm land with crops
to more mountainous scenery with loads of fruit trees and mile after mile
of plastic greenhouses with only the very odd high-rise seafront resort!
Then we came to the turn for Cabo Cope which lead us out into the wilds as
we drove up and up leaving the greenhouses far below. At the top, we came
to what we called Coll Cabo with stunning views back the way we had come
and down to the Med far below. I noticed a small service road to a disused
phone mast so reversed up and parked near the edge for our spot for
tonight, the only downside being it’s a bit hazy. After a big snack, we
had a brilliant walk up a track behind the van which followed the ridge
until we could see the coast with several tiny sandy coves far below, we
were out an hour and returned to chicken and rice. Another nice day seeing
the sights let’s hope tomorrow brings the forecast sunshine and clear
views.
